Myrtle Beach

They keep adding nice things to the resort. I think they're about done now. We swam in the ocean today. Annabel is the only one with every body part sticking out above the surf except for her head. Everyone kept looking at her like she needed help. I'm used to it.

It was a long drive!

This is Darren blogging now. I don't want any of Deborah's posse thinking me guilty of any deception and so this is my formal disclosure of authorship. It is an intersting story explaining how I wound up on vacation and Deborah stayed at home. Given that the typical reader of this blog is vastly more partial to Deborah than to me I'll let her provide the official account. My short and irrelevant account is something like: screaming yelling...."I can't take this anymore!" yadah, yadah, yadah..."Never again." A N Y W A Y, after a long drive we're here. In retrospect leaving at 9PM and driving all night for approx 16 hrs probably wasn't ideal but we did arrive safe and sound.

And, they're off!

My family is on their way to Myrtle Beach and I am home with Winnie. We will, hopefully, get the house cleaned and back in order while they are gone.
Darren wanted to leave at 9pm and drive all night so they wouldn't have traffic in the DC area.
Can you believe the weeping and wailing from two girls headed to the beach?

Have fun, drive safely, don't fight and call me.

Afternoon visitor

Look who came to visit us on the backporch today. Good thing Winnie wasn't outside; she might have eaten it.

Orange Belt Graduation

Annabel is one more step on her way to black belt. She received her orange belt in karate on Thursday. She is one tough cookie. She comes home from class hoarse, because she yells louder than any one else.

My own personal handymen

Posted by Picasa
While my dad was in town, he and Noah took care of my honey-do list.

Rehung the broken towel rack.

Fixed my leaking toilet.

Glued a cabinet door that was splitting and tightened several cabinet screws.

Put up a screen to keep the birds from nesting in my oven vent.

Reattached the drawer face.

Dad, thanks for fixing so many things while you were here. You're a life saver.

the Jonas Brothers

The Jonas Brothers were at Darien Lake last night, as were we-Annabel, Bea, Lindsay and I.

Darren surprised the girls with tickets to the concert. Somehow, I'm the one who ended up sharing the whole, loud, hormonal experience with them.

Annabel screamed as loudly as any other pre-pubescent girl there, and I think there must have been a million little girls there.

Fencing

Annabel just finished a week of fencing lessons through our town rec. She wasn't so sure that she would like it, but what do you know, she did.

Stoney Brook State Park

After Corning, we headed to Stoney Brook State Park, which has been one of our favorite places since Noah was a baby. The kids loved the water and the falls, but we couldn't convince Lindsay that the 62 degree water wasn't too cold for swimming or wading.

Corning Museum of Glass

On Thursday, we drove 1 1/2 hrs south to Corning to see the museum there.
We saw some beautiful things, but it is a once in a lifetime trip--meaning I don't need to ever return.

Dad sat in the back to keep the kids from fighting and Noah and Bea learned how to do lots of knots. Noah should get a merit badge out of this.

Redwings

Darren got box tickets for another Redwings game on Wednesday night.
It was especially fun to be able to take Lindsay and Dad along as well.
Having done both box seats and general admission seating, I'd have to say I prefer the box seats! Free seats and free food will get me everytime.

Summer Reading

Bea has spent her summer reading the four Ivy and Bean books. It is so exciting to have her find something that she really enjoys reading. Coincidentally, she received her first book for her birthday, as did her best friend Cameron the next day on her birthday and her best friend Emily was reading an Ivy and Bean book that week as well. I don't think any of the mothers were aware of this at the time.
Bea is almost done with book 4 and now will have to wait for the next book in the series to come out.

Stories from Grandpa

Grandpa and cousin Lindsay are in town on their way to Minnesota to drop off Lindsay at Macalester College for her freshman year. I walked into the room to find all four kids listening to Grandpa tell stories about his family. Dad is a great storyteller and I have laughed a lot in the last couple of days.
